Cheat Sheet – Social Media Image Sizes

Thank you LunaMetrics for the ultimate, complete, final cheat sheet for social media image sizes. See below…but is it “final?” Certainly don’t want to jinx that, but it will probably be hours before FB modifies their layout and image specs. :) -Dan, TGPRsocial-media-sizing-cheat-sheet

What KONY 2012 YouTube Numbers Say About Social Media

Unless you were living under a rock last week, you probably heard about Kony 2012.  Mobile phones pushed view counts of the cleverly produced video while it surfed walls and timelines — mainstream media gave it more exposure on the nightly news. If you were under said rock:

This post isn’t about the video origins, how it went viral, or the backlash that is going on now. What we aim to do is take a look at the raw numbers. The social media takeaway was that this was a viral video in the truest sense – racking up 100 million views faster than Susan Boyle, Rebecca Black; you too Sneezing Panda. These numbers are astounding and can truly be appreciated if you have ever been with a client who wants to “will” a video to go viral and understand how difficult it is to get views.

We love the “Show Statistics” button YouTube installed several years ago. It gives a fascinating view into how a video went viral. Here is where the views came from in descending order:

Date Event Views
A
03/05/12 First view from a mobile device 25,513,835
B
03/05/12 First embedded on – facebook.com 9,490,097
C
03/05/12 First referral from – facebook.com 7,591,761
D
03/05/12 First referral from YouTube search – kony 2012 5,660,192
E
03/05/12 First referral from a subscriber module 2,410,994
F
03/05/12 First referral from YouTube search – kony 1,510,590
G
03/05/12 First referral from – twitter.com 1,218,884
H
03/05/12 First referral from related video – KONY 2012 278,548

What do these numbers say? That as of RIGHT NOW mobile and Facebook are more important than ever. The mobile viewers eclipsed all the other categories. It just reinforces what Apple said at the recent iPad launch that we are living in a post-pc world. The numbers also showed that when it comes to Social Media, Facebook is still the king. With 9.5 million views through Facebook embeds and 7 million views referred from Facebook, the social media giant may deserve every cent of that rumored 100 Billion dollar IPO evaluation.

While Facebook is sailing high, the KONY numbers paint a different story for Twitter. Coming in at a distant 1.2 million views it proves something we have been wondering ourselves. The theory that the user audience of Twitter is more sophisticated and elite than on Facebook (Media figures, Actors, Great Thinkers, Pop Stars) which paints Twitter out to be more than it really is. Just because Twitter declares something a Worldwide Trending Topic does it actually mean it is? One can think of Facebook like “the silent majority” where as Twitter is the loud and brash segment which is just that — a lot of noise.

This is a more complicated question for another blog – and though we admit that we don’t know how many of those mobile viewers were referred from Twitter. It’d be interesting to see what those results are. In the meantime, check out how KONY blew away the other videos as the fastest to 100 million views:

Every day more than two billion video views take place on the Web; over 35 hours of video uploaded each minute.  Is your business video one of them?  If you answered “no,” you are not alone. Many businesses do a pretty good job with a website, and maybe even have a Facebook page.  But many, including most small-to-medium businesses are still not using video to promote themselves.

Remember the phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words?”  That saying goes for video, too.

The business world is undergoing epic changes in the way it reaches customers.  Social media now helps reach customers through blogs, Facebook, twitter and more, and each of those sites has a placeholder to upload your video.  The younger the customer, the higher the expectation that some cool video will engage them to buy your product, eat at your restaurant or purchase and drive your car.

So make a promise to yourself right now to make at least one professional video this year that you can link to in your email signature, post on your business Facebook page, send to your twitter followers, tell LinkedIn friends about and post to the Holy Grail – http://www.YouTube.com.

Here are six video quick tips to get you going:

  1. Identify your audience and then focus every part of the video on serving their needs.  Decide whether you need an on-camera spokesman or just text to tell your story.
  2. Will you grab your Web audience in just 30 seconds or is your story so complicated that you will need three minutes?  Length is critical: long enough to cover the subject, short enough not to bore.
  3. A technical approach that works on social media platforms might not work on broadcast television so decide the format – smart phone or flip camera vs. professional high definition?  Whatever format you choose should reflect a professional image and not just be “wobble” cam.
  4. Ensure quality audio:  If the audience cannot make out what you are saying or if the music drowns out the narrative, you have just lost a customer.
  5. How will the video be distributed?  Do you have in-house resources to get it placed or will you need to hire a PR agency to get the message out?
  6. What’s your budget? Prices can range from $1,000 to $100,000 and more. By starting with a budget in mind, a video company can help you develop the right spot so that expectations are met.

The World Is Watching

We can write endless blog posts, case studies and commentaries about why social media is a part of your business (whether you like it or not). But nothing beats video examples!

Within hours after hitting the web, this video had close to 200k views on YouTube. To all companies — it’s 2012! Your employees and actions are being recorded at all times and could will end up on the internet. All of the carefully crafted marketing strategies and advertising budgets take the back seat to one social media moment like this. Good news is you can recover, and the two way conversation social media offers means one bad apple doesn’t have to spoil the whole barrel. We applaud FedEx for taking to their Twitter page and posting an apology.
